Blossoms are only one of Door County’s attractions in springtime! Door County is home to 11 historic lighthouses; eight wineries along the Door County Wine Trail; many silent sports options and races begin the first weekend of May. But second to the beauty of Door County’s flowers, are the arts. There are more than 100 art galleries and studios, award-winning professional theater, and multiple live music venues throughout Door County, and Egg Harbor is home to some of the best!
One of locals’ favorite things to do in April and May is to visit some of the 100+ art galleries and studios to see new artwork on display and for sale. Artists work all winter on new art and re-set their galleries with new displays. Click here for a list of galleries in Egg Harbor. While you’re out, pick up an Arts Guidebook or Door County Arts Map for directions to other galleries around the county.
There are a number of fine art and craft fairs on the weekends from mid-May through October, beginning with the Ellison Bay Spring Art Crawl (May 18-19) between galleries at the northern tip of the peninsula. Jacksonport Maifest (May 25-26) celebrates spring with a variety of activity, including horse pulls, juried craft show, and kolaches! The Sturgeon Bay Fine Art Fair (also Sat/Sun Memorial Day weekend) is a short drive (20 mins) away from The Landmark Resort, and hosts 100 fine artists, demonstrations, and children’s art projects, all at a picturesque waterfront park on Sturgeon Bay’s working waterfront.
Let your own creative side explore at one of several area DIY craft centers. Create and take home a momento of your trip to Door County at any of these nearby craft studios: Stone Silo Studios (Egg Harbor), CLINK! (Ephraim), Reclaimed, Resale and Workshop (Ephraim), Hands on Art Studio (Fish Creek).
If your significant other isn’t so into art or DIY, come stay in Egg Harbor on one of the spring fishing tournament weekends. The Baileys Harbor Brown Trout tournament (April 25-28) and Sturgeon Bay Open Bass Tournament (May 16-19) are both fun events for guys and gals to fish and are a month apart. The Rotary Shipyard Tours, and Door County Half Marathon (May 4) are also a great weekend with something for all of your friends and family to do.
Make plans to stay through Sunday evening one weekend (beginning in June), and catch a FREE show at the outdoor Sunset Concert Series at the Peg Egan Performing Arts Center. Each community has a series of free outdoor summer concerts that begin mid-June. Check out DoorCounty.com for the schedules, or look at the music line-ups here for each community’s concert venue: Baileys Harbor, Egg Harbor, and Peg Egan Center in Egg Harbor, Ephraim, Fish Creek, Sister Bay, and Sturgeon Bay.
There’s a myriad of other music venues for live free and paid music, just a short bicycle ride or drive from The Landmark Resort! The Birch Creek Music Performance Center is a summer school for talented young musicians; Door Community Auditorium brings in acts of all genres and forms of entertainment; and various bars and restaurants in Egg Harbor and surrounding towns have a regular line up of live music, often for free for customers! Carrington Pub and Grill hosts karaoke every Saturday night throughout the summer.
New on the scene in 2019 is Northern Sky Theater’s new stage and campus! Although you’ll have to wait until Fall 2019 to see a performance on the new stage, you can check out the construction progress and help the troupe out if you’re feeling generous. Stop by Peninsla State Park for NST’s 2019 outdoor theater season. Peninsula Players also has a wonderful season of professional plays lined up for 2019, and celebrates its 84th years as America’s oldest resident summer theater.
